Our Philanthropy

The National Philanthropy of Sigma Psi Zeta is to combat violence against women in its varied forms. This includes but is not limited to the following: rape, incest, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, exploitation, the trafficking of women and children, the abuse of migrant workers, intimidation at work, child abuse, harassment, and spousal abuse. Any kind of physical, emotional, or mental duress constitutes violence.

To accomplish this, SYZters:

  • Volunteer at domestic violence and local women’s shelters

  • Sponsor or attend conferences and meetings that empower womxn’s rights

  • Lend support to womxn who need this specific type of support and seek help for them

  • Help to stop violations against female refugees and asylum seekers

  • Advocate for political causes that affect such demographics

  • Attend and host self-defense workshops and classes

  • Collaborate artistically and educationally with other womxn of color

  • Donate proceeds of activities to organizations that support this same cause

  • Organize collection drives and secure in-kind donations for local charities and domestic violence shelters

By embracing this philosophy, our sorority affirms the demographic we strive to empower as an integral part of our own community, amplifying the collective voice of those impacted. Acknowledging historical oppression, objectification in contemporary media, and cultural subordination, we champion the education, development, liberation, and growth of women, with a particular focus on womxn of color. As both undergraduates and alumnae of institutions of higher education, we equip ourselves for this advocacy, emphasizing the importance of sustained awareness in all environments, even within universities and colleges nationwide.

The pervasive nature of violence against womxn knows no bounds, transcending socio-economic and educational backgrounds, affecting millions globally, and obstructing the fundamental right of women to fully participate in society. Sigma Psi Zeta remains steadfast in our unwavering commitment to stand together in support of our philanthropy, advocating for this cause both as an organization and as individuals.

It’s On Us

In September 2014, the White House launched the National “It’s On Us” campaign. The focus of the campaign is to create an environment where sexual assault is unacceptable and to empower college students to step in as active bystanders to prevent, discourage, or intervene when an act of violence has the potential to occur. “It’s On Us” encourages college students to take a firm stance against sexual violence and join together to support survivors.

Since the launch of the “It’s On Us” campaign by the White House, hundreds of colleges and national organizations have partnered with the campaign to address sexual violence in our communities.

In March 2015, Sigma Psi Zeta officially partnered with “It’s On Us.”. This lifetime partnership marks one of the first Greek organizations to officially partner with the White House initiative. This strategic partnership is part of a continued effort Sigma Psi Zeta has always had in protecting all those affected by violence, especially as it aligns with the organization’s National Philanthropy: to combat violence against women.
